Headwear

What is worn on the head, apart from protective helmets. The department covers caps, beanies, bush hats and balaclavas, plus neck gaiters. The head is the first surface to lose heat when the body is working and the first exposed to the sun at altitude: headwear is not an accessory in either case. The practical criterion is compatibility with the rest of the kit: a thick beanie will not fit under a helmet, and a wide-brimmed hat interferes with shouldering a long gun and with carrying a pack. Protective helmets are filed in the protective gear department.
